New rules since September 2025
You probably need a permit now, even if you didn't before
Clause 52.37 was added to every planning scheme in Victoria on 15 September 2025. It requires a planning permit to remove a canopy tree in most residential zones — regardless of whether your property has ever had a vegetation overlay.
A canopy tree is one over 5 metres tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 metres at 1.4 metres up, and a canopy spread of at least 4 metres. That is an ordinary suburban backyard tree. And it sits on top of your council's own local law, which runs from 110cm in Kingston to 155cm in Bayside.

Tree work is one of the few trades where the wrong operator can put a limb through your roof or end up injured in your backyard on your insurance.
- Ask for the certificate of currency, not just a claim of being insured.
- Ask whether the crew is covered by WorkCover. An uninsured contractor hurt on your property can become your problem.
- Ask what qualification the person quoting holds. Cutting is the easy part — the diagnosis is the skill.
- Get it in writing and itemised, with the stump priced separately so you can compare quotes properly.

How much does tree removal cost in Melbourne?
A small ornamental in an open backyard can be a few hundred dollars. A mature gum overhanging a house, needing a crane and traffic management, runs into the thousands. Do I need a permit to remove a tree?
Often, yes. Most Melbourne councils control the removal of trees over a certain height or trunk circumference, and some properties carry a planning overlay on top of that. We check the controls on your specific address before we quote and tell you what applies.
Will you remove the tree if it's dead?
A dead tree still needs the same assessment — dead wood is brittle and unpredictable, which makes climbing it more dangerous, not less. Many councils also still require a permit or at least notification for dead trees, though exemptions often apply.
How long does a removal take?
A straightforward backyard removal is usually a half day. A large tree dismantled in sections over a house can take a full day or two with a bigger crew.
